Metal Work Engineering Level 1 (CVQ)

Who is this qualification for?

This qualification is for individuals who wish to enhance their effectiveness in the metal, engineering and maintenance industry. Individuals who would benefit from this qualification include:

  • Maintenance staff
  • Mechanics
  • Machine Operators

This list is not exhaustive and only serves to illustrate the breadth of the qualification.

How it is structured?

To be awarded this Caribbean Vocational Qualification (CVQ), candidiates must successfully complete all mandatory  units. Elective units achieved will be awarded unit  Statements of Competence.

What does it covers?

The mandatory units include:

  • Perform related computations – (basic)
  • Classify engineering materials – (basic)
  • Draw and interpret sketches and simple drawings
  • Carry out mechanical cutting operations – (basic)
  • Prepare for oxyacetylene/metal arc welding processes
  • Perform general machining operations

The optional units include:

  • Perform basic welding using manual metal arc welding process (MMAW) and using oxyacetylene welding process (OAW) - fuel gas welding
  • Undertake fabrication, forming, bending and shaping
  • Perform basic lathe operations
  • Perform tool and cutter grinding operations
  • Perform machining operations using horizontal and/or vertical boring machine
  • Weld using gas metal arc welding process GMAW – (Metal Inert gas- MIG)
  • Perform advanced welding using oxyacetylene welding process (OAW)
