TVET Council Barbados

Employers

Overview

The Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Council provides a range of opportunities for employers to help them better train and develop their workforce. Competence-based TVET can help your business become more competitive with employees who are not only trained but certified for the jobs they perform according to the standards you’d expect. Through improving the performance of your employees, you’ll be able to increase productivity. In this section find out more.

What’s in it for your Company/Business?

TVET Council (TVETC) can help you to further develop your workforce in a number of ways:

Employment and Training Fund

The Employment and Training Fund (ETF) promotes and supports training and upgrading of skills for the labour force. It is funded out of the Training Levy that is paid by all employers and employees. Its primary focus is to provide grants to encourage the private sector to expand and upgrade its training facilities. Benefits are two-fold:

Your workforce receives training to upgrade their skills and your business can become more competitive as a result

You can recover some or all of your company’s contributions to the Training Levy, if your business trains staff according the conditions of the fund

Grants are not provided to individual employees and students. Furthermore, the ETF does not support training programmes involving university degrees and professional qualifications.

Click here for more information on the ETF – how to access it, what conditions apply, as well as priority areas.

National/Caribbean Vocational Qualifications (N/CVQs)

National/Caribbean Vocational Qualifications (N/CVQs) are work-related, competence-based certifications awarded by the TVET Council. CVQs are the regional equivalent of NVQs.

You’ll benefit from N/CVQs in several ways:

Improved employee performance/skills

Increased productivity among staff

Improved quality of products and services

Improved motivation of your employees

More cost-effective training

Better guarantee of a job candidate’s capability

Occupational Standards

Occupational Standards are precise descriptions of what your employees are expected to know and be able to do in their work role and are designed to base training, qualifications and recognition of achievement on independent evidence of what people are able to do.

The Standards are set by Industry Lead Bodies (groups led by employers and practitioners with the relevant occupational expertise who know exactly what skills are needed to do each job well).

Several benefits accrue to those employers who adopt Occupational Standards in their business/organisations:

  • More relevant education and training provisions and qualifications
  • Improved flexibility and competitive advantage
  • Better “guarantee” of capability
  • Benchmark for use in customised training
  • Incentives to employees
