Masonry Level 1 (CVQ)

Who is this qualification for?

This qualification is for individuals who wish to work effectively in the general construction industry. Individuals who undertake this qualification would be afforded the opportunity to develop skills such as mixing mortar and concrete and laying bricks/blocks. Individuals who would benefit from this qualification include:

  • Mason Apprentices
  • Labourers
  • Construction Workers

This list is not exhaustive and only serves to illustrate the breadth of the qualification.

How it is structured?

To be awarded this Caribbean Vocational Qualification (CVQ), candidates must successfully complete all mandatory units. Elective units achieved will be awarded unit Statements of Competence.

What does it covers?

The mandatory units include

  • Carry out measurements and calculations
  • Read and interpret plans
  • Use hand and power tools
  • Carry out excavation
  • Prepare for construction process (brick/block laying)
  • Mix cementitious materials (mortar and concrete)
  • Prepare for construction process (solid plastering)
  • Lay bricks/blocks (wall and corner)
  • Apply solid render
  • Restore and renovate solid plasterwork

The optional units include:

  • Erect and dismantle restricted height scaffolding
  • Handle steel fixing materials
  • Craft a personal entrepreneurial strategy
  • Place concrete
