Furniture Making Level 2 (CVQ)

Who is this qualification for?

This qualification is for individuals working in the furnishing industry who wish to acquire knowledge of furniture making techniques and construct basic timber-furnishing products, for example:

  • Carpenters/Joiners
  • Woodwork Apprentices
  • Cabinet Makers

This list is not exhaustive and only serves to illustrate the breadth of the qualification.

How it is structured?

To be awarded this Caribbean Vocational Qualfication (CVQ), candidates must successfully complete all mandatory units plus a minimum of one (1) Level One elective unit, three (3) Level Two elective units and one (1) Level Three elective unit.

What does it covers?

The mandatory units include:

  • Construct a basic timber-furnishing product
  • Operate basic woodworking machines
  • Join solid timber
  • Hand-make timber joints
  • Construct furniture using leg and rail method
  • Construct chair and couch frames
  • Select timbers for furniture production
  • Produce angled and curved furniture using solid timber and manufactured board
  • Setup, operate and maintain sawing machines

The optional units include:

  • Construct cane (wicker) furniture
  • Apply surface coatings by hand
  • Carry out data entry and retrieval procedures
  • Develop, design, prepare and transfer patterns
  • Perform wood carving
  • Craft a personal entrepreneurial strategy
