“The year 2017 will call for a judicious mix of competence and character, readiness and willingness to work, buttressed by a ‘can do’ attitude!”
So said, Dr Hensley Sobers, Chairman of the TVET Council Barbados when he outlined the organisation’s 2017 goals.
High on the agenda was competing at WorldSkills International in October 2017 in Abu Dhabi, in the skill areas of Automobile Technology, Cooking, Fashion Technology and Hairdressing.
“Inspired by the success of DJ Puffy in Chile, beating world class DJs in the art-form of mixing music, we will also do extremely well at WorldSkills International,” Dr Sobers said. He complimented staff for hosting a successful WorldSkills Barbados Competition in 2016.
The Chairman also called for greater focus on Research and Communications as well as promotion in critical areas such as the Employment and Training Fund (ETF) and the Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) programme.
He said the idea behind this was to “uplift the value of technical and vocational education and training as an integral part of mainstream education and life-long learning”.
Dr. Sobers also called for innovative ways to convert trained persons to the point of being assessed and certificated. This should produce better integration of resource persons.
Lastly, he encouraged staff to continue to work together to accomplish this year’s goals. (PR/TVET Council Barbados)
