Each Unit of the National Occupational Standard has the following components:

1. Function Title
This is a broad description of the outcome to be achieved.

2. Element Title
This is a detailed description of an activity which a person should be able to do.

3. Performance Criteria
These indicate what is required for the successful achievement of an element

4. Range Statements
The range puts the element of competence into context. It described the range of situations

5. Underpinning Knowledge
This is essential knowledge needed in order to demonstrate competence that cannot be shown by performance
