What is Technical and Vocational Education and Training - (Jan - Mar 1998 Vol 1 No 1)

Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) covers all programmes and schemes which contribute towards the development of life skills, knowledge and attitudes so essential in today’s highly competitive world. In this context, “life skills” refer to a firm foundation in literacy, numeracy, problem solving and communication skills.

Is there a Difference between “Technical” and “Vocational”?

Over the years, the distinction between “technical” and “vocational” pursuits has become increasingly less significant in the Caribbean region. In the Caribbean Glossary of Technical and Vocational Education and Training Terms, Caribbean countries have, therefore, been urged to discontinue the use of the term “technical/ vocational education and training”. The term “vocation” was used before the Industrial Revolution to apply to careers such as law, medicine and the church. After the Revolution, the term “technical vocation” was introduced to refer to careers in the trades. The terms were later separated to refer to distinct levels of careers in the engineering field. Today, technical and vocational education and training policies and programmes are designed for preparing individuals for careers in all fields.
