What Are NVQs?

National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) are qualifications that reflect the skills, knowledge and understanding an individual possesses in relation to a specific area of work. The NVQ will signify that the person to whom it is awarded has met the established national standards for an occupational or work role. The award is granted to persons who demonstrate the competences embodied in the standards for an occupational area.

The TVET Council is in the process of developing NVQs for Barbados. A pilot project is expected to commence towards the end of 2003 and culminate in 2004. It will lead to the introduction of NVQs in the key areas of Information Technology, Tourism and Hospitality and Customer Service.

The foundation upon which NVQs are supported is as such; NVQs:

  • are based on national occupational standards
  • assess application of standards at work and in real work conditions (e.g. simulation)
  • are free from overt and covert discriminatory practices
  • are free from barriers which restrict access and are available to all those who are able to reach the required standard
