NVQ Workshops in Progress September 5, 2003 The
Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Council has moved
into a new phase of developing work based qualifications. The
first three in a series of half-day workshops to develop National
Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) in Information Technology, Tourism and
Hospitality and Customer Service were held in July at the Accra Beach
Hotel and Resort and the Savannah Hotel, respectively.
On
July 1, members of the Information Technology Lead
Body met with the TVET Council's
technical staff - Senior Technical Officer Wendy McClean, Technical
Officer Andrew Skeete and Technical Officer (communications &
research) Samantha Jones, along with clerk typist Rhea Springer -
at Accra to recommend the design of NVQs for Using IT Levels 1 -
3. The
group met again on July 29 at Savannah to develop the evidence
requirements for Using IT Levels 1 - 3. On
July 9, the Tourism and Hospitality Lead Body
also met with the technical staff at Accra to recommend the design of NVQs
for Tourism and Hospitality Levels 1 - 2 in Food and Drink Service,
Reception, Bell Service and Bar Service. The
workshops are expected to continue until October when the NVQ project will
move into the next phase of development which is the establishment of the
NVQ Awarding Body, under the direction of project consultants, the
Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA). NVQs
are work
based qualifications which
are developed out of occupational standards. As a result they provide
better preparation for the world of work, offer a guarantee of a
job candidate's capability, respond to changing needs in business and
industry and promote a culture of life-long learning which is at the
center of any economy's competitiveness.
