Register of
External Verifiers to be Setup
August
29, 2003
As
part of the process to set up an Awarding Body for National Vocation
Qualifications (NVQs), the
TVET Council will be creating a register of persons to serve as External
Verifiers.
External
Verifiers are subject-specialists whose job is to make sure that the NVQs
in their subject area are being assessed to the same high standards at the
respective centres.
The
frequency with which External Verifiers visit centres offering NVQs will
depend on several factors, including the centre's experience in
delivering nationally
recognised qualifications.
There
was favourable
response to advertisements placed in the local press for persons qualified
and experienced in the areas of Information Technology, Tourism and
Hospitality and Customer Service, to register for the opportunity to serve
as external verifiers.
The
next step in the selection process, which is the interviewing of
applicants who have been
short listed, is expected
to be completed by the end of October.
NVQs
are based on the concept of occupational competence; the ability to
perform to the standards required in employment across a range of
circumstances and to meet changing demands. NVQs concentrate on what
people can do; this includes the technical skills as well as planning,
problem solving, dealing with unexpected occurrences, working with other
people and applying the knowledge and understanding that underpins overall
competence.
Because
they focus on the outcome of successful learning, a range of different
learning routes and opportunities are open to individuals.
